Drama Queen Tall Bearded Iris (Keppel, 2002)
If you’re looking for bold garden drama, Drama Queen tall bearded iris absolutely lives up to her name.
Introduced by renowned hybridizer Keith Keppel, this award-winning iris commands attention with near-black cyclamen-purple standards that rise above richly saturated cyclamen falls streaked with golden capucine buff veining. The contrast creates a glowing, almost theatrical blaze at the center of each bloom. Rusty orange beards layered with purple and a white base add even more depth and intrigue.
Standing tall at 38 inches, Drama Queen blooms in early midseason and produces large, exhibition-quality flowers with a slight sweet fragrance. A cross of ‘Tangled Web’ × ‘Epicenter,’ this striking cultivar has earned some of the highest honors in the iris world, including the American Dykes Medal (2011) — the top award for tall bearded irises.
An occasional rebloomer (reported in cooler climates such as British Columbia), Drama Queen is prized for both garden impact and show bench performance. As with all tall bearded irises, it is drought tolerant, deer resistant, and easy to grow in full sun.
For collectors, competitors, and gardeners who love rich, dramatic color, Drama Queen iris is a true statement piece in the perennial garden.
